Oysters in the House was less an event than a glorious public accident.
Fourteen oyster farmers, fourteen Semillon producers, 8,000 oysters, 500 bottles of Semillon and enough martinis to make the King’s Birthday feel personally targeted. Shell House roared. The oysters vanished. The Semillon behaved beautifully. The martinis behaved appallingly. Exactly as required.
It was briny, brilliant, loud, louche and just dangerous enough to be memorable. The only lesson learned: never put this much shellfish, wine and civic pride in one room unless you intend to do it every year. So we will.
Oysters in the House is now an annual spectacular — a high Mass of merroir, mischief and magnificent hangovers.
Next year on Sunday 17 June 2027: more oysters, colder martinis, fewer Monday commitments. God Save the King!
